Free of conviction of any crime punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary
Good physical and mental condition
Must be a U.S. citizen of at least 21 years of age
Must pass hearing and vision standards
Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
Possess a valid Kansas driver's license
Weight must be proportional to height
Candidates are screened through an application process. Successful applicants are interviewed by a board of KHP personnel. A background investigation and polygraph precede any offer of employment.
Motor Carrier Inspectors receive on-the-job training at their assigned scale houses. MCIs also are required to complete 16 hours of in-service training each year.
MCI Law Enforcement Officers receive 22 weeks of extensive training at the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy in Salina, Kansas. Applicants who are certified law enforcement officers at the time they begin work with the Patrol receive on-the-job training.
