Civilian staff members support the agency's administrative functions, such as accounting, records, information technology, support services, and human resources.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is a statewide law enforcement agency made up of uniformed and civilian personnel. Civilian members staff the agency's troop offices throughout the state and General Headquarters in Topeka, Kan. Many opportunities are available for civilians, including accounting, administration, human resources, information technology, purchasing, records management, support services, vehicle maintenance, motorist assistance units, and VIN inspection.

Candidates are screened through an application process. Successful applicants are interviewed by a board of KHP personnel. A background investigation precedes any offer of employment.

Salary

Salaries are set by the Kansas Legislature and approved by the Governor. Each position’s starting salary compares favorably with local businesses and industry standards.

Promotions

Promotional opportunities are available within the agency. Eligibility differs among positions.

Retirement

Civilian staff members are members of the Kansas Public Employees’ Retirement System. Members may retire with full benefits at the age of 65, at age 62 with 10 years of service credits, or at any age when combined age and years of service equal 85 credits.
