Encompassing 73 counties, the West Region is predominately agricultural and includes large beef processing plants in Dodge City, Garden City, and Liberal. The West Region is home to Kansas State University, Wichita State University, Fort Hays State University, as well as several community and private colleges. There are two major military bases in the region - Fort Riley and McConnell Air Force Base.

The West Region is comprised of four field troops. Port facilities with fixed scales are located in Liberal, Kanorado, Belleville and South Haven and Motor Carrier Inspectors operate throughout the region.

The West Region commander also oversees Central Communications Center (Troop M) and the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Unit. Located in Salina, Central Communications provides statewide dispatch for the Patrol and oversees the Patrol's statewide radio communications.

Because of the vast rural area of the West Region, Highway Patrol personnel maintain a close working relationship with other law enforcement agencies. The fixed-wing aircraft based in Salina and Hays provide multiple air capabilities to all law enforcement agencies in western Kansas.
