Captain Mills Retires From the Patrol
Colonel William Seck, Superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, has announced that Captain Sam L. Mills has retired from the Patrol, after serving the citizens of Kansas for 27 years. Mills retired on Dec. 16, 2005.
Mills joined the Patrol on June 18, 1978 as a trooper performing road patrol duties in the Garnett area. In 1987, he was promoted to sergeant and assigned as a zone supervisor in Wichita. Mills became a "safety" sergeant in 1990 in the Wichita and Chanute areas and a zone supervisor in Chanute in 1992. In 1993, Mills transferred to Eureka as a Master Trooper. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant in 1999 and transferred to Olathe where he was assigned zone supervisory duties. In 2000, he was reassigned as Troop A's administrative lieutenant. Mills was promoted to lieutenant in 2002 and assumed responsibilities as Troop A commander in Olathe. He was promoted to Captain in 2003 and continued his duties as Troop A commander. Mills served as an instructor at the Patrol's Training Academy, teaching recruits defensive tactics and communications skills over a period of 20 years. He also served as a field training officer for four recruit troopers.
Mills is a graduate of Eureka High School in Eureka, Kan. Prior to joining the Patrol, he was undersheriff in Woodson County.
