Governor, Superintendent Unveil KHP Aircaft Hangar
Governor Kathleen Sebelius and Patrol Superintendent Colonel William R. Seck unveiled the Kansas Highway Patrol's new aircraft hangar in Topeka today during a ribbon cutting ceremony. The hangar, located at Billard Airport, houses the agency's Topeka-based helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and the Executive Aircraft, as well as storage space and office space for the aircraft operations staff.
"The Kansas Highway Patrol is committed to serving and protecting the citizens of Kansas from the ground and the air. Federal and local law enforcement agencies rely on the Highway Patrol for aerial support for a variety of tasks, including searching for missing or wanted persons, relaying medical equipment and needs, surveillance of criminal activity, and much more," said Governor Kathleen Sebelius. "This hangar will benefit the Patrol's aircraft operations, which in turn benefits all of us who live and work in this great state."
Construction of the facility was completed in January 2007 and paid for at no expense to taxpayers using money seized by troopers from illegal drug runners. The facility includes a 12,000-square-foot hangar that holds five helicopters, three fixed-wing aircraft, and the Executive Aircraft, plus 3,000 square feet for office space. The hangar also includes a workshop area for the aircraft operations' mechanic.
"I am pleased our agency has been given the opportunity to construct this facility for our aircraft," said Colonel Seck. "I appreciate the support of Governor Sebelius and the Kansas Legislature, which allowed the agency to move forward with this project. Our aircraft support communities across the state; this facility is a true asset for all Kansans."
The Patrol's aircraft operations began in 1961 with a primary responsibility of traffic enforcement. Since then, the program has flourished to include surveillance, search and rescue, transportation of vital equipment and personnel, and other important tasks. The agency has aircraft stationed in Topeka, Salina, and Hays. The new hangar in Topeka is the first agency-owned aircraft facility. Prior to constructing this new facility, the Patrol leased hangar space at Billard Airport. The Patrol continues to lease hangar space for the Hays and Salina aircraft.
