Dean has been presented numerous awards in his career with the KHP. That same year, the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC) presented Dean with an award for seizing 31.3 kilograms of methamphetamine, which was the largest highway interdiction meth seizure in the United States. He received three awards from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for his contributions in drug law enforcement in 2003, 2004, and 2006. In 2006, Dean was recognized by the KHP for seizing 11.7 pounds of heroin, which was the largest heroin seizure for the agency. Also in 2006, Dean received a Commander's Commendation for making 35 felony drug arrests that year.

Dean is a graduate of Washburn Rural High School in Topeka, Kansas, and he earned a bachelor's of science in sociology / criminology from Kansas State University.
