PMCA Donates Fuel to Patrol
Taxpayer dollars are stretching further for the Kansas Highway Patrol thanks to the generous contribution of gasoline by the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association (PMCA) of Kansas. For the 18th year in a row, the PMCA has donated gasoline to fill up patrol cars during the winter holidays. Through the Holiday Highway Safety Program, the PMCA is donating gasoline to the Patrol to fill up patrol cars from December 24 through January 1. This generous donation is an example of public and private entities partnering to ensure the safety of motorists traveling in Kansas.
"Once again this year, as has happened the past 17 years, the PMCA of Kansas has graciously donated fuel for Kansas Highway Patrol troopers to use as they patrol the roads during the holiday season. Their partnership with us is a blessing, and I thank the PMCA for their participation in the Holiday Highway Safety Program," Patrol Superintendent Colonel Terry Maple said. "Travelers in Kansas should feel honored to have a private entity supporting their local law enforcement, as we join together to ensure Kansas roads are safe during the busy Christmas/NewYear’s holidays."
The PMCA of Kansas is a nonprofit organization for independent petroleum distributors, gasoline retailers, and convenience store owners. This year, participating members of the PMCA will graciously provide tanks of fuel for troopers to fuel up patrol vehicles.
During the 2007 Christmas and 2007-2008 New Year's holiday reporting periods, the Patrol made 100 impaired driving arrests, issued 500 occupant protection citations and warnings, issued 97 child restraint citations, and assisted 2,899 motorists.
Motorists also may contribute to a safer traveling experience by using the following tips:
- Prepare your vehicle for winter travel by replacing your wiper blades, ensuring your tires have good tread, and checking your vehicle’s fluids, exhaust system, and other mechanical equipment.
- Clean frost and snow off all windows, mirrors, and lights, and use your headlights to provide optimum visibility.
- Accelerate and brake gently, and increase your following distance between you and other vehicles in adverse weather.
- Steer in the direction you want to go if your vehicle loses traction and begins to slide.
- Allow for more time when traveling to and from work, home, school, or other activities.
- Always wear your seat belt, and properly secure children in the proper safety seats.
