Jefferson County Checkpoints Announced for This Weekend

The Kansas Highway Patrol will be conducting two check lanes in the Jefferson County area this upcoming weekend. There will be a driver's license check lane on Friday and a DUI check lane on Saturday.

Friday, September 4 will be the driver's license check lane. The lane will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the U.S. 24 and Thompsonville Road junction. The junction is south of Perry Lake, and west of the town of Perry. Troopers will be checking drivers to assure that all are properly licensed for the type of vehicle they are operating, and that the license is valid and current.

A DUI check lane will also be held in Jefferson County this weekend. The lane will last from 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, until 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 6. The DUI check lane will be held on Ferguson Road, just north of K-92 highway. This location is on the east side of Perry Lake.

The check lanes are part of the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT)-funded Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). The current STEP campaign, underway since August 21 is 'Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.' The campaign is a zero-tolerance campaign to discourage and help prevent impaired driving. This STEP campaign will be conducted through Labor Day, September 7.

With the Labor Day holiday underway this weekend, the Patrol would like everyone to have safe and enjoyable travels throughout the state. Remember, if you're going to drink and need to leave your location, designate a sober driver or call a taxicab to come pick you up. Another important tip to keep you safe on the highways is to make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled up, including children and babies in the appropriate child safety seats. A seat belt is one of the best ways to protect travelers from injury or death, should they become involved in a collision.
