Troop A, headquartered in Olathe, is responsible for the 4 counties encompassing the greater Kansas City, Kansas metropolitan area. Members of this troop work closely with their Kansas Department of Transportation and Kansas City Scout partners to manage the high volume of traffic and calls for service experienced daily.
On average, troopers in the area answer more than 64,000 calls for service per year, and work more than 2,200 crashes.
In addition to investigating fatality, injury, and property damage crashes on area highways; troopers:
Assist stranded motorists
Conduct criminal investigations, commercial vehicle inspections, and traffic enforcements
Respond to planned and unplanned traffic events
With the help of area partners, such as KDOT, this troop administers the Motorist Assist Program, as well as the Kansas employees utilized as operators at the KC Scout Traffic Management Center.
One of Troop A's biggest challenges is controlling traffic at the Kansas Speedway in Wyandotte County. During major races, more than 100,000 additional vehicles place heavy demands on an already bustling highway system.
