Carrillo Honored with Governor's Award for Valor

Today, Kansas Highway Patrol Technical Trooper Raul Carrillo was honored with the Governor’s Award for Valor. Carrillo was recognized for his actions in February when he rescued a man from his burning semi, following a crash.

The Governor’s Award for Valor is intended for those KHP employees whose acts of heroism demonstrate exceptional bravery under circumstances involving risk of severe personal injury or loss of life to either the employee or another person.

On February 21, 2018 at approximately 4:04 p.m., Technical Trooper Carrillo was on duty, when he witnessed an injury crash occur on the Kansas Turnpike. A semi-truck with a tanker hauling diesel fuel had been northbound on the Turnpike, and crashed into the center barrier wall. The cab of the truck crossed the barrier, and the entire truck and tanker fell onto the driver’s side. Carrillo saw flames coming from the cab, and heard the driver yelling for help. Carrillo approached the truck, and realized the driver was trapped in the vehicle, which had caught fire. Carrillo freed the driver through the shattered windshield. The driver of the semi and Technical Trooper Carrillo sustained severe injuries during the incident.  Carrillo is a 20-year veteran of the Patrol.

“Technical Trooper Carrillo acted in a truly heroic manner. He rose above and beyond the call of duty, risking his own life to save another, bringing great credit to the Kansas Highway Patrol and to himself,” said Colonel Mark Bruce, Superintendent of the Patrol. “I could not be more proud of him.”

The Kansas Highway Patrol is releasing dash-cam footage from this event, which can be found here:
