Agencies Partner to Promote Safety Over the Upcoming Memorial Day Weekend

The peak of summer travel across our nation’s highways is about to begin. The Kansas Turnpike Authority and Kansas Highway Patrol are partnering to remind motorists to travel safely over the upcoming holiday weekend, and throughout the months ahead.

Over the 2017 Memorial Day Holiday weekend, statewide there were four fatal crashes, which killed four people. One of the crashes was alcohol-related. Additionally, 142 people were injured in the 403 total crashes from May 26-May 29, 2017.

The Kansas Highway Patrol will join other agencies from across the state to participate in the annual Click It. Or Ticket. STEP (Special Traffic Enforcement Program) campaign, courtesy of funding from the Kansas Department of Transportation. The STEP campaign allows officers to work overtime hours to provide extra patrol on the roads, focusing on areas such as occupant protection, enforcing impaired driving laws, enforcing the state’s texting laws, and other traffic safety issues. KHP will be working additional hours from May 21-June 3.

“Seatbelts are your best defense in a crash,” said Eric Becker, KTA Director of Roadway Operations. “Though we hope travelers don’t need it, if they experience a need for roadside assistance on the Turnpike, they can call *KTA to receive assistance from a KHP Troop G trooper or the State Farm Safety Assist program.”

The agencies wish all of those traveling over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and throughout the summer, safe travels. If you are in need of assistance on a Kansas highway, you can call KHP for assistance at *47 (*HP) or *KTA (*582) for the Kansas Turnpike.
