KHP Arrests 16 Following Protests at Capitol

June 4, 2018, The Poor People’s Campaign held a rally at the Kansas State Capitol building in Topeka. The rally was permitted to take place on the Second Floor Rotunda of Capitol Building from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

At approximately 3:00 p.m., several of those in attendance violated the permit’s terms, and moved from the permitted area on the rotunda, and sat outside of the office of Governor Colyer, where they engaged in yelling and singing.

Ultimately, the demonstrators were given a five-minute warning to move back to the demonstration area allowed by their permit, and if not, they would be subject to arrest. The majority of the participants peacefully moved back to the rotunda. However, 16 individuals refused, and were taken into custody for Criminal Trespass (a misdemeanor). These individuals were booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.
