KHP Names Two Honorary Troopers

Today in Wichita, the Kansas Highway Patrol named two citizens Honorary Troopers. Jeremy Menges, Park City, and John Werner, Wichita, were honored for their response to a fatal crash which killed a KHP Motorist Assist Technician on March 7, 2018.

Immediately following the crash, the motorist assist truck caught fire. KHP Motorist Assist Technician Ricardo Torres was inside the vehicle and unresponsive. John Werner of Wichita, arrived at the scene of the collision and retrieved a fire extinguisher. He attempted to put out the fire. Jeremy Menges of Park City, arrived, entered the cab of the truck, and attempted to remove Torres as the vehicle was still burning. Eventually, Menges was able to free Torres, with the help of a paramedic. After removing Torres to a safe location, Menges began life preserving measures until other first responders arrived at the scene.

Both Menges and Werner did not hesitate to assist our Motorist Assist Technician Torres and put themselves in danger.

“These two brave men are commended for the assistance they provided to a member of this agency. Their heroic actions came at great personal risk, and each of them is an extraordinary example to the citizens of Kansas,” said Colonel Mark Bruce, Superintendent of the Patrol.

The Patrol is grateful, and thanks these two brave individuals for their actions performed that day. We are proud to serve in a state with wonderful citizens such as Jeremy Menges and John Werner.
