KHP Pursuit and Fatality Crash
Today, an officer with the Kansas Highway Patrol was attempting to stop a black Acura passenger car that was identified as a suspect vehicle in a criminal case reported to the Topeka Police Department. The suspect was observed traveling southbound on SW Gage Blvd when the driver turned west onto SW Holly Ln, in Topeka. As the Acura was westbound on SW Holly Ln, and when the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver of the Acura rapidly accelerated and failed to stop at the intersection at SW Holly Lane and SW McAlister Ave. The driver of the Acura struck a white Ford Explorer that was traveling south on SW McAlister Ave.

The suspect and passenger in the Acura, as well as the driver of the Ford Explorer were transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. Unfortunately, the driver of the Ford Explorer later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) has responded and will complete a full reconstruction of the crash. The driver of the suspect vehicle will be booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections upon his release from the hospital.

At this time, no names will be released pending next-of-kin notifications. Upon next-of-kin notifications, a crash log will be published on KHP’s online crash log site at: https://www.accesskansas.org/ssrv-khp-crashlogs/index.do. This crash remains under investigation. The Patrol will also provide updates on any charges filed in this incident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol extends its deepest sympathies to the victim of this crash.
