2020-05: Officer Involved Shooting on the Kansas Turnpike

Officer Involved Shooting on the Kansas Turnpike 
This evening, Thursday, March 5, 2020, shortly before 8 p.m., a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop a black Chevrolet S10 pick-up truck, westbound on the Kansas Turnpike at around milepost 199 for displaying a stolen license plate. The S10 failed to stop which initiated a pursuit. During the pursuit, troopers were able to successfully deploy tire deflation devices. After the suspect struck the devices, the pursuit continued a short distance before troopers utilized a tactical vehicle intervention to stop the suspect’s vehicle. Once the TVI was completed, the suspect vehicle then rammed a KHP patrol car and shots were fired by a trooper.

The suspect sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area medical center.

A KHP trooper suffered possible minor injuries and was transported to an area medical center and later released.

As is standard practice, and in accordance with Kansas Highway Patrol policy, the trooper involved will be placed on administrative leave while this case is being investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
